Status report

Conner is graduating today to eating Sariah's milk. They will see how well he takes it. If he takes it, they will turn up the feed rate quickly to jump-start his recovery.

We found out there may be some damage to a nerve that runs to the diaphragm. If there was damage during the surgery, they will have to operate again to remove scar tissue and tie his diaphragm down allowing the lung to fully inflate. If they don't operate, it could take several months for the nerve to heal allowing Conner to get off the ventilator. We will see on Monday when they attempt to extubate him. If Conner does okay with the extubation, he will probably be home within a week of pulling the tube. This will be great to get him home and love on him again.

Sariah here...The hardest part lately has been missing my baby. He is starting to wake up more but the nurses say it is best not to touch him. The touching stimulates him too much. He realizes how uncomfortable he is and that he has tubes all over the place. Sometimes just hearing our voices can upset him because he wants to be cuddled. Yesterday we got to the hospital and started stroking his head and talking to him like we have been and he got upset and started to drop in his oxygen saturation levels. They had to bag him and he took awhile to get his numbers back up. They found too that he needed more sedation and his tube needed re-taped. That has helped. They had to give him more paralytic and morphine to settle him down. The rest of the day though he was restful. Like Andy said he is slowly but surely starting to recover. He is a fighter and will be feeling better soon.

We are doing good. The sun is shining and we are enjoying the fresh air from time to time.

I pray the nerve will heal and no surgery is required. It's hard not to want to hold and comfort you baby! Especially knowing it causes more strees! Glad you are both there and have each other!

It was good to talk to you today--And Happy Birthday to Andy from our family. Whitley, Porter and Tanner are all doing really well. We are all having a lot of fun together and everyone is being really good. I think we could adopt them all because it just seems like everyone belongs here. I think we will all be sad to drop them off with Andy's mom tomorrow. We will be praying for little Conner and for his nerve to heal. Your feelings of wanting to hold and cuddle him make me think of our Heavenly Father and His desire to care for us if we will turn to him. Hopefully it won't be long before you can return to your full mothering ways. We think of you often and look forward to your return home.

Sometimes I wonder how many drafts of each blog post you go through before it actually goes up on the internet. It would take me several, ranging from "Why, God, WHY?!" to "I hate everyone" to "Pity me"...but yours are always wonderful and spiritual and patient. You people are amazing, seriously. I hope and pray that everything goes well for you and Conner. Cheers!
